  • Note-taking skills practice
  • A variety a non-fiction and fiction readings designed to stimulate writing and to support across the curriculum subject matter.
  • Practice with CAHSEE, and California State Standards

 

How Credit is Earned: 

  • Students may earn as much as 1 credit per 12 hours of productive work.
  • Since Session #4 is 33 days long, a student may receive 2.5 credits for:   
    • Attending at least 30 of the 33 days
    • Arriving prepared and on time
    • Working productively without disruption
    • Completing assigned work within ability level
  • A point system is utilized daily by the teacher to track productive work

 

How Additional “Home Credit” is Earned:                         

  • Students may contract privately with the teacher to do Home Credit.  It is not required.
  • Home Credit is accumulated in addition to ClassCredit and may be equal to but not exceed the amount of Class Credit earned by that student.  Theoretically, a student could earn 2.5 credits in class and an additional 2.5 credits outside of class for a total of 5 credits for the session. (This, however, is rarely attempted and even more rarely accomplished because of the amount of work involved.

  • Grades are determined by a point system tied to:
  • Productive work points (mentioned above)
  • Work quality points
  • Test points

  • Personal Power is a personal growth course that acquaints students with the qualities necessary for success in schools and on the job.
  • Topics include:
    • Keeping Agreements
    • Demonstrating Integrity
    • Showing Respect
    • Out-thinking Stereotypes
    • Acting Assertively in Problem Situations instead of
      • aggressively
      • passively
      • passive-aggressively
    • Managing Anger
    • Eliminating
      • Automatic Excuses
      • Automatic Blaming of Others
      • Automatic Victim Language
      • Repetitive Negative Cycles
    • Accepting Responsibility
    • Choosing to be Positive in the Face of Difficulties

    • Completing required homework (see handout)

  • Note:  Personal Power Course has ½ credit of mandatory homework.  This homework not only provides students with more credit toward graduation, but is an essential tool in encouraging students to deepen learning and to clarify their  commitment to graduation.  Parents are asked (but not required) to participate with their sons and daughters in discussions about the homework.  (See “Required Homework” handout.)
