Textbook: Modern World History; Patterns of Interaction
Course Description:
Students will study the major turning points that shaped the modern world, from the late 18th century through the present, including the cause and course of the two world wars. They will trace the rise of democratic ideas and develop an understanding of the historical roots of current world issues. Students will also develop an understanding of the geographic, political, economic, and cultural contexts surrounding world issues. Specific subject matter in this course follows the standards set forth by the state and district course outline for Modern World History.
Required Reading and Classroom Activities:
Students are required to participate in all classroom activities. This includes text reading, supplemental reading, as well as, lecture and discussion of subject matter. Participation and attendance in class are vital to ensure maximum credit and class grade. Completion of each daily assignment is required for all students, regardless of whether they were present or absent on that day. Students that fail to complete assignments due to absence will be allowed adequate time to complete and hand in all work.
Credit and Grading Policy:
Students will be graded and awarded credit based upon the combination of completed work, and participation in classroom activities. This formula equates to six classroom hours of productive work equaling one-half credit. ( 12 days = 1 credit)
Students will be issued a weekly grade which is posted on the district website for this class and can be monitored by parents. Grades are updated each week.
Recommendations for Extra-Credit Work:
In accordance with continuation high school standards students may match the number of credits available in a particular class with outside extra-credit. In other words, if 2 ½ credits are available in a session the student may match that with 2 ½ credits of extra credit work for a total of 5 credits.
Acceptable Extra-Credit:
Book Reports- see instructor for requirements and appropriate outline.
Projects- Prior approval and discussion with the instructor is required.
