Creative Writing

Purpose: This really fun class will focus on four English components: creative writing, oral presentation, vocabulary building and book/movie reviews. Students are encouraged to focus on developing new writing styles, reading more than is their current habit and expressing themselves clearly and creatively through the pen. This course is designed to further develop and enhance student’s knowledge of, appreciation for skills in writing a variety of products.

 

Attendance: Since daily attending is crucial to learning, students are challenged to stay on the time table for completion of the course, and for showing a strong work ethic.

 

Grading: Students will earn a daily behavioral score reflecting Positive Productive Seat Time (PPST). This will be a portion of the grade. Secondly, students will complete a checklist of assignments and thirdly, a portfolio will be completed and presented during the final week of the session. . Progress reports are given out once per week.

GRADES: 90% – 100% A, 80% - 89% B, 70% - 79% C, 60 – 69% D, 59% below F

NOTE: Students who are late or forget their binder get ˝ hour credit that day.*

 

Credits: For every 12 hours of PPST, the student may earn one credit if the class is successfully passed. In class hours should be matched with outside hours. Assignments are outlined in manila file folders available in class. Outside credit is due one week before the end of the session.

 

Dress code: Due to the nature of this class and the emphasis on strictly following appropriate dress codes at work, students will be allowed into class ONLY if they are dressed according to the SUHSD dress code.

 

Supplies to be brought daily:

  • Binder (1 ˝ inch is sufficient)
  • Pens/pencils
  • Homework/outside work
  • Brain and heart
  • Late work: Unexcused late work is accepted with a 25% penalty. If you have an excused absence for two days, then you have two days to turn in homework work BUT remember that the homework has to do with the curriculum being taught that day so it doesn’t do as much good if the student stalls in doing homework…

     

    Outside credit: Outside credit is work done on the student’s time outside of class. It is due one week before the end of a session at class time. No exceptions, please. . Please pick up a handout for instructions on what projects you may do. For every hour attended in class, you may match that with an hour of work outside of class… 12 hours equals one credit. This is typically a five-credit class unless stated otherwise. This equals approx. 60 hours of work in six weeks.

     

    Types of writing possibilities:

    Journal writes, character education stories, newspaper articles, biographies, autobiographies, research papers, debate papers (pro and con), personal reflections, poetry, speech writing, fiction, songs. Short stories, sagas.
