CAHSEE MATH
Mizz Waller
Class overview: This MATHLAB is a preparation to strengthen math skills needed for real world situations, calculations and passing the math portion of the CAHSEE.
OPTIONAL Textbook: 1) Math Connections 2 1999 edition is checked out to each student. http://www.glencoe.com/sec/math/studytools/ost.php4/ca is a web site with games, study guides and fun stuff. This may be worth checking out. 2) CAHSEE study materials will be used extensively as well.
Class flavor: This class is a self-paced and disciplined class and if a student is absent, he/she is less likely to gain as much as if they attended classes daily. Discussions are common and our desire is to build skills in students. To do that, it is best if the student is consistently present in the classroom.
Grading: 80 % of the grade is based on the student’s weekly progress report generated by the computer program. Binders are checked weekly as well and points given. Daily behavior scores are taken and this will factor in to student’s grade as 20%.
90% – 100% A, 80% - 89% B, 70% - 79% C, 60 – 69% D, 59% below F
One-hour credit is given per day of Positive Productive Seat Time (PPST!) Progress reports are given out 1 – 2 times per week.
NOTE: Students who are late or forget their binder get ½ hour credit that day.*
Supplies to be brought daily:
- Binder (1 ½ inch is sufficient)
- Pencils (all work is done in pencil!)
- Red or black pen for correcting
- Outside work
- Brain and heart – A willingness to attempt solving problems
Outside credit: Outside credit is work done on the student’s time outside of class. It is due one week before the end of a session at class time. No exceptions, please. . Please pick up a handout for instructions on what projects you may do. For every hour attended in class, you may match that with an hour of work outside of class… 12 hours equals one credit. This is typically a five-credit class unless stated otherwise. This equals 60 hours of work in six weeks.
Success Contract: All students examine and sign a “Success Contract” to show their intention for success in this class. This outlines various policies and procedures including a goal for credits/hours/grade. The teacher has a copy as does the student.
*Calculators are not allowed. Your brain is much more reliable! Honest!
In my classroom, great things happen. Welcome!
