Aggression Replacement Training

Mizz Waller

Class overview: This class is a marvelous curriculum that is being used in 26 states and 6 countries around the world. It is very effective in helping students understand and manage themselves in regards to feelings, thought processes, social skills and behaviors. The success rate for graduation is 95% if a student will give 100% in the A.R.T. program! Great!  What other program does THAT?

The four main focal points are: Anger Management/Intro to A.R.T. (1), Empathy Training (2), Social Skill Rehearsal (3) l and Character Education. mixed in. These classes are broken down into six week sessions. Therefore, this is an 18 week course.

Class flavor: This class is a participatory class and if a student is absent, he/she is less likely to gain as much as if they attended classes daily. Group projects and discussions are common and our desire is to build skills in students. To do that, it is best if the student is consistently present in the classroom.

Grading: Daily scores are given based on behavior, homework finished, and discussion participation. There may be short assignments that involve discussion with parent(s) or mentors. *One-hour credit is given per day of Positive Productive Seat Time (PPST!) 12 hours PPST equals one credit. Progress reports are given out 1-2 times per week.

NOTE: Students who are late or forget their binder get ½ hour credit that day.*

90% – 100% A, 80% - 89% B, 70% - 79% C, 60 – 69% D, 59% below F

Supplies to be brought daily:

  • Binder (1 ½ inch is sufficient)
  • Pens
  • Homework/outside work
  • Brain and heart

Late work: Unexcused late work is accepted with a 25% penalty. If you have an excused absence for two days, then you have two days to turn in homework work BUT remember that the homework has to do with the curriculum being taught that day so it doesn’t do as much good if the student stalls in doing homework…

Outside credit: Outside credit is work done on the student’s time outside of class. It is due one week before the end of a session at class time. No exceptions, please. . Please pick up a handout for instructions on what projects you may do. For every hour attended in class, you may match that with an hour of work outside of class… 12 hours equals one credit. This is typically a five-credit class unless stated otherwise. This equals 60 hours of work in six weeks.

Success Contract:  All students examine and sign a “Success Contract” to show their intention for success in this class. This outlines various policies and procedures including a goal for credits/hours/grade. The teacher has a copy as does the student.

In our classroom, great things happen. Welcome!
